Black, White and a tinge of Grey - Unexplained Point of Relaxation

Monday, March 31, 2008

Hello readers and welcome to my blog. For once I decided to rant in this post, not exactly rant but simply talk and talk and talk...

Let me begin by telling all of you a simple story:

There were once two farmers, each of them very hardworking and they simply love the feeling of planting and harvesting crops. The king recognises this and gives both farmers a large stretch of land.

"This is reward for being so hardworking!" he commented. The two farmers were overjoyed!

Now Farmer A, named Wayne, and farmer B named Wee Kiat each has different thoughts upon receiving this piece of land.

Wayne: Hmm, let's see. Apart from my daily work, I am going to spend a little time weeding my rewarded land. In this case I am able to start growing crops on that and earn more income!

Wee Kiat: Ahh since my hard work is already recognised by the king, why don't I take a little break before I continue my work. I promise myself I would work hard later!

Wayne:

Wayne set to work immediately after he has gotten everything planned out. He continued his work at his farm daily, then he proceeds to clear the rewarded land of weeds once per two days. In merely 2 months, the land given to him is all ready to serve its purpose for agriculture.

"Time really passes when you are really hard, and it sure pays for it!" Wayne said happily as he proceeded with the planting of crops. After 3 months, he harvested the first 'batch' of vegetable plants.

Wee Kiat:

Wee Kiat lounges in the armchair when he gets home, thinking of how lucky he is when the king actually commented that he is a hardworking farmer and is even rewarded a piece of land. He therefore turns complacent and unconcerned about his new piece of land. He only manages to finish his work daily at his farm on time, and little time is spent on the new piece of land given to him.

After 2 weeks, the weeds in the new piece of land has turned into a knee-length, grass maze! The whole field, which is left unattended, has been covered by grass and nothing else! Wee Kiat realises the magnitude of the problem and started to work on his piece of land right away.

He worked for 3 hours without any rest, and he cuts himself thrice of the shin when he is getting rid of the grass and tiny weeds. He collapses into his armchair after the work is done, although the field still looks terrible from far.

"I...I..." panted Wee Kiat, "Why do I feel so tired out? It has never happened before!"

He pondered for awhile, and decided that he really should do something about it.

A year passes since they have been given this piece of land each. Farmer Wayne invited Wee Kiat to his farm.

Wee Kiat simply got a shock of his life when he caught sight of Wayne's farm. Everything is well organised and Wayne even bought cattle ranching animals and a tractor to assist him in his farming of the land given to him.

"How did you do that? How did you make it?" Wee Kiat asked in disbelief.

"Well I got it all planned out! Ever since I received this land I made good use of it. Both our lands are weedy and we know that they have to be weeded. Of course I can't leave my own farm unattended so I figure that I could complete my work on time first, before I move on to settle my given land. I weed the place once every two days, and now I am consistant! I have already harvested thrice on this field!" Wayne explained.

Wee Kiat hung his head in shame. He had only managed to harvest twice. His working strength may be better than Wayne, but he failed to do better because of one very important point. Wayne patted Wee Kiat on his shoulder.

"Cheer up! Come on buddy, come in for a cup of tea before you go back to your farm to work hard! It's never too late to start, however it is always too late when you look back at what wrong you have been doing all along." Wayne and Wee Kiat walked slowly into Wayne's cabin.

End of Story.
(Characters in this story have been made up and are fictional)

Today I have my Amaths tuition. My cousin came as usual and we are going through Quadratic Equations and Functions. I did not do my Ex 5F homework and my cousin was unhappy about it. Because of the lack of attention paid in my work, I failed to understand my cousin each time he asks a question. It makes him feel furious and it makes me feel lost.

Somehow we managed to sum the whole thing up, and he gave me homework to do plus the work I have owned him. Despite feeling lethargic, a sense of guilt was felt.

Before he go, we had a little conversation.

W: my cousin A: Me

W: Hey, do you really want to work hard to get into a good JC?

A: Err... yes

W: Right now the standard of your studies, you can't even make it in the top 15 JCs!

A: I...

W: Ok I am a worker in an office, and my hobby is to go conoeing and I teaches canoeing as an extra curricular activity for me. You on the other hand is a student...

A: ...

W: So... being a student, your JOB IS TO STUDY!

A: Yup

W: Seriously YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE TO STUDY, once you do well in your studies, you have A WHOLE LOT OF TIME for you to play in future. Just look at you now, your homework is not up to standard and you spend most of your time on the computer. Your mind is DISTRACTED from your work to the computer. Look at me, I have completed my university and I am now working. When I go home, what time do I have. ABSOLUTE FREE TIME!

A: ...yes...

W: I work and earn money, and what optional stuff can I buy for myself? PS3! PSP! But I don't. I have internet access, but I do not play much games, online games. Why? Simply because what's the point? Even up till now, I still think that playing online games are for your leisure. Chatting on msn, watch videos on youtube, they are simply for your leisure! If that disrupts your work, you simply have to abstrain from it!

A: ...

People are not meant to be stupid. It is the way that their minds work and how they control themselves that determine a clever person and a complacent person.

Let's take a look:

A person who manages his time well, does his work regularly, revises his work through everytime he reaches home should do very well in his/her studies.

A person who does his work regularly, but often distracted by gaming or other stuffs is able to do well in his/her studies, provided that extra time is spent on revising.

A person who manages his play time and studying time well, has a good attitude towards studies and likes to go out with friends would do fairly well in his/her sudies.

Lastly a person who has a low foundation in his studies, often distracted by things such as gaming and hormones, spends little or no time and effort on these problems are people who get 5 failures in each test.

Remember a person is not stupid, take a look back at the farmer story. The two farmers are currently the two main types of students in today'e learning environment, whether good or bad it depends on the individual. If he/she is willing to change, good for him/her.

Just yesterday I had a little fun talk with SieYuan and ZhiCong about o2jam. They were quitting and I simply wanted them to come back to o2jam. But after today I am not really so sure I would want them to come back. I mean, just simply forget this whole thing. I should try my best to play o2jam leisurely, not simply treating it as something more important than O levels. In that case, I should be able to do better in my studies, provided I really act on my words. =D

"一份耕耘,一份收获"。就如刚才那两个农夫的故事之中,我们可以得到一个启发:凡是做任何事情,都必须谨慎,安排好自己的时间用心地去做。如果选择浪费时间,经过多次的拖延,必须完成的事便会越来越多,到头来辛苦的又会是谁?

Alright it getting abit late and I need to get some rest. By the way this is my lame video that I posted on youtube today about me playing the scary maze game.

Haha see ya!
